4 Steps to Become a Positive Thinker6 min read

All of us like to think we are a positive thinker. We tend to think we deal with generally well and cope day to day with the problems that come into our world. Yet for many people, life is about survival and not about taking advantage of every minute and feeling like we are living life to it’s fullest potential.

How can you tell if you are a positive thinker? Here are a few questions you can ask yourself, to help you reach the correct answer to that self-discovery question.

  • How do you feel others think about you?
  • Do you feel confident in your skills and abilities?
  • Do you feel confident in your decision-making abilities at home and work?
  • Do you look at the week ahead as full of challenges or full of problems?
  • Do you believe you can improve your ability to achieve new successes? Do you feel you are trapped in a cycle from which you cannot escape?
  • Do the problems in some areas of your life tend to cloud your perception of other things?

If you answered mostly yes to these questions, it’s possible you engage in negative thinking about your life and the things in your life that cause you distress and problems. If you said no, use that list to help keep yourself from falling into the trap of sometimes feeling sorry for yourself and starting on the negative track.

Steps to Think Positively

People who are affected by negative thinking can turn it around by acknowledging that they are prone to think this way. With that in mind, it becomes easier to face it and begin to change how you approach life, if you are honest with yourself. Many people don’t recognize they are caught in a trap of negative thinking, so acknowledging is the first step in turning it around.

Many times, you may have heard people saying you to think in a positive note to get the outcome of things right. You may have wondered how to think positively when circumstances show negativity. To say, positive thinking depends on the practice and willingness to do so. Here are some steps that can help you to think positively even if you are a negative minded person.

Read or listen something positive in the morning

First, every day when you get up in the morning, read or listen to some quotes related to positive thinking. Listening makes a greater impact than reading. You can hear these quotes on television and radio. You can also download them from the Internet. They are available in plenty over the web. In addition, you can always keep a book with you to read it any time throughout the day you want to. This is the first and basic to follow to bring about an optimistic attitude to you.

Always speak positive

Second is always to speak in a positive tone. For instance, instead of saying, “The glass is half empty”, say, “The glass is half full”. This throws a positive impact on the listener’s mind and he or she gets the confidence to proceed further with challenges. Keep hope and believe in yourself to make a difference in your attitude. This works in favor of optimism.

Take ownership

Instead of accusing others or yourself of some failed work, take the responsibility to get out of the situation and achieve success. Blaming only lead to more failures, negativity, and fear in yourself. Therefore, take the stride as to why the things went haywire and seek the solution to reorder things once more. The faster you learn to do this, the greater things will start happening in your favor.

Surround yourself with positive people

Make sure you don’t allow yourself to be around negative people, but be positive and focus on being positive. Ask a friend to help you see the positive side of things and to help you learn when you are not being positive about something. Write down those moments and make an effort to think of an alternative way of responding to whatever caused the negative thoughts and talk.

Do not let negative emotions surround you. For example, you may have failed in your exam. It is definite that you will get upset and be in a morose state for many days. However, you have to avoid being in a morose state and think positively as to why you have failed. Analyze the reason behind your failure, create a new strategy to move forward, and start working on it from the next day. Think that the failure might have done some good to you. You get to learn much more than the others do. Instead of passing out this year with little marks, it is better to pass off the next year with excellence.

Thus, there are few strategies to make you from a pessimistic person to an optimistic person.

Benefits of Positive Thinking

You must have heard a lot being said about the power of positive thinking. Even the very famous Law of Attraction which has been immortalized in the book The Secret speaks about the power of optimism. The law goes as far as to say that if you think positively about something with complete devotion, then even nature changes its plans to make it happen for you.

That may well be true because if you have a very positive thought about something, you are going to consciously or subconsciously take some actions in order to fulfill it. You may not even know that you are doing something for your wish fulfillment. And, when you are planning things in a particular direction, things begin to take the shape you want.

That apart, there are several other benefits of positive thinking that you may not have given much thought to. Here are some of them.

When you divest yourself in thinking positively, people consider you to be a better company. Who would anyway want to be with someone who is always shrouded in the cloak of pessimism? Pessimism is infectious; it doesn’t just pull you down, but it dampens the spirits of the people who are with you too. Hence, if you think too negatively, people are not going to want to associate themselves with you.

Remember positive thinking usually attracts positive people and outcomes. This is a sure way of realizing your full potential.

Positive thinking can make you cheerful. Try it the next time you are going through a rough patch. Forgetting the turbulent times you are in, think optimistically about the future. And think hard. You will find that sooner or later you are able to shun the thought of debility and surge ahead. You cannot completely forget the gravity of the situation, but at least you become more gracious in handling it.
